Is It Worth Worrying about My Home's Environmental Sustainability?
Tracy Mae Ildefonso
Innovation Showcase
Recent incidents in social housing have highlighted the poor living conditions faced by tenants, resulting in fatalities in the UK and increased respiratory illnesses in Ireland. Irish social housing landlords initially responded to complaints regarding issues like mould, dampness, condensation, and cold homes by advising tenants to self-clean with anti-mould paint and suggesting behavioural changes. Despite promises of regenerating some social housing properties, these commitments remain unfulfilled. The government has initiated efforts to upgrade social homes through grants for deep energy retrofit and Net Zero standards for newly built homes. However, the social housing sector faces the challenge of engaging tenants in maintaining a healthy and sustainable home. To address this issue, our research aims to provide a tool in the form of a low-cost, non-intrusive, environmental sensor to monitor indoor air quality and offer customised recommendations to tenants. This sensor is designed to ensure tenant control over their data and easy comprehensibility of the technology. Our project has gathered findings from 28 stakeholders through one-on-one interviews and developed a prototype. The study delves into these current findings and the prototype overview. We hope that this initiative will foster a deeper understanding of home sustainability and air quality among social housing tenants, leading to lower repair costs for the social housing sector and contributing to a more sustainable Ireland in the future.

On the Suitability of Action Plans for Facilitating Urban Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation
Prince Dacosta Aboagye
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Local governments are expected now more than ever to lead climate action planning as climate change intensifies and urbanization increases rapidly. However, studies indicate limitations in the comprehensiveness and level of integration of adaptation and mitigation in existing climate action plans. To develop suitable climate action plans that are comprehensive and consistent with globally accepted standards and benchmarks, this study proposed an Urban Climate Action Planning framework and pilot-tested it with 257 urban climate action plans. Overall, 43 criteria are included in the framework across three stages of climate planning. The pilot test revealed that more than half of the sampled plans have a medium level of suitability, with 39% having a weak level of suitability. About 51% of plans from Europe have a weak level of suitability. Surprisingly, none of the plans sampled from Africa and Latin America achieved a weak level of suitability despite lacking a significant share of global climate research and development funding. A Kruskal-Wallis test shows a statistically significant association between stages of climate planning and (a) city types (p-value of 0.004326) and (b) year of adoption or publication of climate plans and suitability scores (p-value of 0.0001027). Urban climate action plans adopted or published more recently (2018-2022) are likely more suitable than those adopted or published earlier. The sampled urban climate action plans from the Global South had higher average suitability scores than those from the Global North. The study presents key findings and considerations for urban climate action planning and future research.

Decoupling Approach to Carbon Emissions and Economic Growth Nexus
Francis Ayensu
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis has dominated literature in ecological and environmental studies. Though a lot of studies have either validated or refuted the theory, researchers are still divided as to its relevance in explaining environmental disasters in this modern era. Besides, not many studies have verified the validity of theory for carbon emissions-economic growth nexus in less industrialized economies. Using decoupling and decomposition analysis, the study aims to investigate whether economic growth drives carbon emissions in less industrialized economies. The research approach is deductive since the study seeks to validate or invalidate a theory. The research design is causal since the study seeks to explain the effect of economic growth on environmental pollution. The research method is quantitative since the study relies on secondary quantitative data to study the relationship between carbon emissions and economic growth. The study samples 15 economies from the target population of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The sample design is a purposive sampling method since the selected countries must meet certain criteria. The source of data is primarily secondary data. Data is gathered from World Bank Development Indicators. The analysis is a decoupling and decomposition analysis of economic growth from carbon emissions over 31 years from 1990 to 2020. Tapio decoupling method as well as logarithm mean divisia index (LMDI) decomposition method is applied to conducting decoupling analysis and decomposition analysis respectively.
Construction Project Management Sustainability Competencies
Malcolm Roy Weaich
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Introduced in 2019, South Africa's carbon tax has imposed escalating financial penalties on corporations exceeding emission limits, costing up to six billion rand annually. This research scrutinises Construction Project Managers' (CPMs) perceived competencies in green retrofitting against the benchmarks established by the Council for the Built Environment (CBE) and the South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP). It develops and validates Cognitive Competency Theory (CCT), which posits that the effectiveness of CPMs in executing sustainable retrofitting practices is markedly influenced by the synergistic relationship between their cognitive perceptions—including self-efficacy, outcome expectations, and personal agency—and their professional competencies, encompassing technical, behavioural, and contextual skills. This research underlines the criticality of bridging the gap between policy and practice to achieve sustainable outcomes in construction projects, especially amidst the pressures of carbon taxation and environmental regulations. Employing qualitative methods, the study engages with thirteen experienced CPMs in green refurbishment, unveiling that while CPMs play a central role in mediating carbon tax demands and championing sustainable development, they frequently lack comprehensive understanding of their role in environmental protection and adherence to carbon tax regulations. The conclusion posits that although CPMs are vital in navigating the complexities of green retrofitting, it is imperative to further explore the evolving role of CPMs in relation to regulatory pressures and industry standards. The CBE underscores the necessity for CPMs to possess competencies across various project development stages, yet the industry has not yet standardised sustainability competencies as a mandatory requirement for CPMs in SA.

An Unsupervised Machine Learning Analysis of Sustainability Indicators Using the k-Means Clustering Algorithm Among 2,485 Global Corporations
Gloria Schmitz
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Large corporations contribute to waste proliferation and global environmental degradation; however, more research is needed to understand these trends. Unsupervised machine learning can provide unique insights into how firms cluster on different sustainability indicators with relevance for the circular economy (CE) framework (i.e., metrics related to waste reduction and promotion of reuse). This study uses data from 2010 – 2020 for 2,485 global companies to explore how firms cluster together on sustainability metrics and whether a firm’s headquarter location and industry determine its clustering. Using the k-means unsupervised machine learning algorithm, one-way ANOVA, and Chi-square tests for key variables (e.g., industry, location of headquarters, total environmental cost and progress toward the UN Sustainable Development Goals 12.2, 14.1 and 14.2) across clusters, I found that the majority of firm-year observations cluster together (n = 13,313), with a small minority of firm-years (n = 39) with the most negative CE and environmental impacts clustered together, as well. The key findings indicated that the k-means algorithm grouped firms into four distinct clusters. Firms headquartered in the EU were not more likely to be in the most sustainable cluster, while firms in extractive industries (e.g., fossil fuel and mining) were more likely to be in the least sustainable cluster. These results can help policymakers identify key factors that could influence firms to adopt business practices aligned with circular economy goals worldwide while also enhancing the understanding of complex interfaces between corporate sustainability and public policy.

Assessing the Impact of Social Media User-Generated Content and Online News on Sustainable Destination Branding
Walter Spezzano,
Carolin Lusby
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The rapid growth of tourism supply and demand has contributed to overtourism, resulting in environmental, social, and economic strain on many destinations. Among these, Miami Beach has been notably affected during spring break, prompting actions to address overcrowding, increased crime and violence rates, and pressure on local resources. To counter these challenges, the destination has been rebranded for the 2024 spring break season through a targeted marketing campaign aimed at mitigating overtourism, promoting sustainability, and discouraging disorderly behavior. A key component of this campaign is a video featuring residents breaking up with spring breakers, which has generated significant online discussion and engagement. Destination branding is a co-creation process involving destination marketing organizations, tourism stakeholders, intermediaries, residents, and consumers. Therefore, this work examines user-generated content across social media and online news about spring break in Miami Beach to explore their combined influence on the destination image. Relying on Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies (CADS), this research investigates how online discourse from these sources shapes public perceptions of the destination and seeks to assess the impact of these perceptions on the effectiveness of the rebranding efforts. Understanding the role of online discourse in destination branding is essential for refining destination brand positioning. By examining the interplay between social media content and news coverage, this work aims to provide valuable insights into how sustainable destination branding can be refined by aligning with evolving public opinion.

The Centered Quadruple Model of Sustainability
Hamidreza Harati
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This paper explores the evolving role of universities in addressing sustainability challenges through a novel governance framework—the Centered Quadruple Model. While extensive government regulations and private sector initiatives aim to promote sustainability, their effectiveness is often hindered by fragmented interactions and inconsistent responses. In response, this paper proposes a model where universities are positioned centrally, acting as integrators and coordinators among the public sector, private sector, and community. The model highlights the unique capacity of universities to leverage scientific expertise, regulatory guidance, and educational influence to enhance sustainability outcomes. By examining the limitations of traditional governance frameworks, such as the Triple Helix Model and the "third mission" of universities, this study advocates for a redefined approach that fosters comprehensive collaboration. The proposed Centered Quadruple Model emphasizes the importance of universities in bridging gaps between sectors, facilitating multi-stakeholder engagements, and setting standards aligned with sustainability goals. Through a review of current literature and theoretical advancements, this paper argues that universities can significantly enhance the effectiveness of sustainability initiatives by integrating diverse stakeholder perspectives and promoting systemic change. The study concludes with recommendations for future research and practical applications of the model in advancing global sustainability efforts.

From Global Ambitions to Local Realities
Mark Akrofi
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The SDGs, adopted globally in 2015, necessitate localization where national and sub-national entities adapt and integrate these goals to address socioeconomic and environmental issues in different contexts. This research examines how local governments in Ghana integrate the SDGs into their Medium-Term Development Plans (MTDPs) and assesses the association between these localized efforts and key socio-economic development outcomes. By analyzing the MTDPs of 138 local governments across 14 regions, the research finds that 78% of the 169 SDGs targets have been localized in Ghana. Nonetheless, goals related to climate action and environmental sustainability, show less localization, indicating a need for targeted interventions. A Pearson correlation analysis revealed a strong association between localized SDGs and improved socio-economic outcomes, particularly in areas of healthcare access, education, energy access, and poverty reduction. The study highlights the potential of SDGs localization to drive sustainable development and underscores the importance of empowering local governments in tailoring global goals to local contexts. The study's insights contribute to the broader discourse on SDGs localization, offering valuable lessons for similar initiatives in other sub-Saharan African countries.
