Abstract
Place-Based Education (PBE) offers transformative potential for advancing sustainable educational practices by integrating local contexts and cultural knowledge. However, its adoption remains limited due to the prevalence of standardized educational models that prioritize global frameworks over localized approaches. This review examines the status of PBE in Nigeria, the challenges faced, and strategies for implementation, drawing on 24 studies and global adaptations. Findings indicate that PBE in Nigeria shows significant promise, especially in environmental and science education, enhancing student engagement and performance through local and cultural integration. Challenges include limited research on PBE, resource constraints, inadequate teacher training, and curriculum misalignment. Opportunities lie in enhancing educational relevance through the use of local languages, incorporating indigenous knowledge, and fostering cultural and environmental awareness. Global PBE models emphasize experiential learning, technology integration, and community involvement, offering valuable insights. Adapting these strategies to Nigeria’s context could improve teacher training for implementing PBE methodologies, enrich curricula by incorporating local and indigenous knowledge, and promote a more inclusive and sustainable educational system. Proposed strategies to overcome challenges include integrating local knowledge into educational policies, strengthening community partnerships, and investing in targeted professional development for educators.
