Study of Biological Properties of Soils Contaminated with Heavy Metals: Case of Almaty City, Kazakhstan

Abstract

A comparative assessment of the degree of heavy metals contamination of the soil cover of different functional zones of Almaty was carried out: industrial zones, motorway and park areas. The condition of soils is assessed based on biological indicators. Patterns of changes in the biological properties of Almaty soils contaminated with heavy metals, such as soil enzymatic activity, abundance of Azotobacter bacteria, phytotoxicity, humus content and acid-base conditions, are established. A correlation between the content of heavy metals in the soil and the biological properties of soils has been established. An assessment of biological indicators of soils condition was carried out based on the feasibility of their use for biodiagnostics of the condition of urban soils contaminated with heavy metals. The results of the study can be used for biomonitoring and biodiagnostics of the condition of urban soils and ecosystems exposed to heavy metal pollution, when creating maps of urban soil pollution with heavy metals and their resistance to heavy metal pollution; when developing urban soil quality standards; when determining the maximum permissible anthropogenic load on soils; when forecasting the ecological condition of the soil cover of Almaty and other cities, etc.
