Abstract
The role of the private sector in implementing green governance policies in India is examined in this paper, specifically the Digital India initiative. With rapid economic growth and environmental sustainability as dual challenges facing India, green governance has become a popular aspect of its policy agenda. The Indian government has introduced a range of initiatives to decrease carbon emissions, promote renewable energy and increase environmental sustainability. Nevertheless, all these efforts need the participation of private companies, who have substantial roles on both policy formulation and compliance. This study identifies how private sector businesses are contributing to the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in India with focus on Digital India program. Additionally, this means that digitalization should be used as an instrument for developing policies that promote environmentally friendly strategies by private firms. First launched in 2015, Digital India is a campaign seeking to digitize the government with an aim to make it more efficient and drive economic development across the country. This paper explores where digitalization meets green governance and examines how digital platforms can be used by companies to achieve environmental goals but also face issues such as low levels of digital literacy among customers; lack of infrastructure; and income inequalities. By looking at case studies and policy frameworks comprehensively, this research shows what opportunities exist for private firms willing to engage in green practices while at the same time addressing any barriers that hinder their progress.
