Abstract
In an era defined by climate change, economic globalization, and shifting governance structures, achieving sustainability in forestry requires an understanding of how global change impacts the social dimension of sustainability. This research focuses on the forestry sectors of the Czech Republic and Nigeria to examine the effects of global change on forest-dependent communities, social equity, and sustainable forest management practices. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study combines quantitative data on forest cover, deforestation rates, and economic contributions from forestry with qualitative insights gathered from interviews with community members, policymakers, and forestry experts. By analyzing these data, the research explores how climate resilience, economic pressures, and governance frameworks influence the social sustainability of forestry. The case studies highlight distinct challenges and opportunities in both countries: the Czech Republic, with its structured governance and established certification schemes, demonstrates effective approaches in balancing economic, ecological, and social objectives. In contrast, Nigeria faces significant challenges due to weaker enforcement, illegal logging, and high dependency on forest resources for livelihoods. Findings emphasize the need for adaptive governance that supports local communities, promotes equitable resource distribution, and incorporates traditional knowledge alongside scientific approaches. The research underscores the importance of community-based forest management, international cooperation, and policy reforms to address the social impacts of global change in forestry. This study contributes to the literature by providing insights into how countries with contrasting forestry sectors can navigate the complex social dimensions of sustainability, offering a roadmap for policymakers to create resilient, inclusive, and sustainable forestry systems.
