Perception Study on Women’s Safety in Upper Lake, Bhopal

Abstract

Safety and security are essential to build safe and invulnerable circumstances for visiting places that attract tourists. Women’s safety has become an emergent factor in different familiar and unfamiliar tourist destinations for sustainable tourism development. The study assesses women’s safety in the youth age group by examining the appropriate social and physical infrastructure required at Upper Lake, Bhopal. In this study, a few selective parameters are taken for measures such as Toilets, Street lights, Footpaths, Security (such as CCTV, Police patrolling), and Emergency Services (such as Medical), etc. to assess women’s safety mainly in the evening time. Therefore, a primary survey was conducted specifically taking the perception of women on availability of infrastructure. The study analyses the accessible infrastructure required for the youth age group of people. The study focuses the women’s perception regarding safety at tourist places and addresses various problems and issues related to it. This study’s findings show the level of availability and gap of infrastructure at this specific tourist site of Madhya Pradesh, social and cultural importance of sites, tourist behavior, awareness, etc. After identifying the issues, specific interventions are proposed. Giving importance to women’s safety in the tourism realm, empowering women to travel freely and confidently, and enabling them to make the most of their travel experiences are highlighted.
