Foreign Born Women Faculty in US Academic Institutions

This study explores the experiences of foreign-born women (female and female-identifying) faculty at a university in the US state of Colorado. It is not uncommon that U.S. universities fail to fully understand the challenges and barriers faced by foreign-born faculty. The plight of foriegn-born women faculty is even less understood. Consequently, these faculty may not receive the kind of support nor appreciation they need to perform effectively their full spectrum of responsibilities and duties. Additionally, without an adequate understanding of these faculty’s unique assets, universities may fail to fully capitalize on their strengths. This incomplete comprehension of these faculty members’ experiences and advantages can create situations that negatively impact faculty performance encompassing research, teaching and service, and career wholistically. By shedding light on this under-examined issue area, this study aims to sensitize U.S. universities to the unique challenges and strengths related to their foreign-born women faculty members in the hopes of helping them thrive in mutually beneficial ways. Utilizing an exploratory study conducted at a university in Colorado, this study is comprised of focus group meetings with a self-selected cohort of foreign-born women faculty. The data provide insights on what challenges this group faces and what policies might help address those challenges.

Cultural Humility in Practice

This workshop offers an academic platform for engaging with cultural humility as a critical framework to enhance leadership and decision-making. Targeted toward scholars and leadership practitioners, the session examines the integration of cultural humility in leadership, promoting inclusivity, and addressing systemic inequities. Participants will explore the theoretical foundations of cultural humility, beginning with its origins and principles developed by key field figures. The workshop centers on reflective self-analysis, where participants identify and critique implicit biases and their influence on leadership styles. Through structured exercises, attendees will assess how these biases influence decision-making and explore strategies to reorient leadership practices toward empathy and inclusion. Empirical case studies will be analyzed to demonstrate practical applications, aiding participants in synthesizing these concepts through scenario analysis and role-play. Such exercises foster a deeper understanding of how cultural humility can transform traditional leadership dynamics. A focus on applied cultural humility ensures participants leave with actionable insights and methodologies adaptable to academic and organizational settings. The workshop will cultivate a commitment to continuous scholarly and practical development, guiding participants to formulate personal growth plans. Dr. Crain will facilitate the discourse, empowering participants to champion cultural narratives that enhance inclusive and transformative leadership models. This workshop ultimately aims to integrate cultural humility within leadership practices, fostering environments where diverse perspectives are acknowledged and valued.

Work-Life Experiences of Migrant Women Professionals in the UK Post Brexit and COVID

Migrant women professionals have increasingly driven the agenda of gender equality and resilient economies as the United Kingdom faces workforce challenges post-Brexit and COVID-19. Recent studies reveal that migrant women face both gender and racial discrimination in workplaces, impacting a range of their well-being outcomes. This study explores how the intersection of race, class, gender, and migration status influences the work-life experiences of migrant women professionals in organizational structures and processes. The research questions are: 1) What are the work-life experiences of migrant women professionals, 2) what part of motivation influences their work-life experiences and 3) what are the coping mechanisms for these women in different contexts related to race, migration, and class? This research uses an intersectionality theoretical framework allowing for an embodied analytical frame and narrative inquiry as a methodological tool. An intersectional interpretivism approach is taken by conducting semi-structured interviews for 30 participants consisting of 10 migrant women professionals each of Asian, Black, and White races who are the three dominant ethnicities in the UK. The data analysis method is a reflexive thematic analysis using the rigorous six recursive phases of identifying themes and codes. The potential contribution of this research is to evolve organizational-specific work-life practices and migrant women integration interventions for the private sector.

Institutional Transformation in Animal Welfare

This paper explores the institutional transformation in stray animal welfare management at a well-reputed, autonomous Indian educational institution situated in a semi-forested landscape. Employing an action research approach within an interpretivist paradigm, the author, a resident student from 2018 to 2022, documents the chronological evolution of this transformation. Through two cycles of intervention involving stakeholder engagement, internal and external advocacy, and policy adaptation, the institution shifted from an informal, uneven approach to a formalized welfare framework. This framework integrated feeding stations, shelters, and medical care for stray animals, reflecting both systemic and structural changes at the organizational level and a broader shift in resident values and beliefs regarding animal rights. This study demonstrates how structured interventions can overcome institutional resistance, create sustainable human-animal coexistence, and offers insights into policy adaptation and the role of participatory action research in institutional change. By fostering dialogue on the integration of structured welfare policies in educational institutions, this research aims to contribute to the broader discourse on ethical human-animal coexistence in urban environments.

Greek TeacherAttitudes towards Refugee Children

Five teachers narrate their thoughts and problems they face as well as their expectations regarding the education of refugee children. The researcher uses Bennett’s (1993) theoretical model of intercultural sensitivity in order to present the extent to which the teacher is “open” to the intercultural difference towards refugee children and their families. The purpose of this study is to capture the thoughts, problems and expectations of teachers who teach refugee children. The research tool is the narrative based on the narrative model of Clandinin and Connelly (2000). Regarding the results, the teachers emphasize that it is very important to specialize with continuing education such as a master’s degree in intercultural education and participating in seminars related to the education of refugee children.
