Abstract
My research looks at how male students studying Gender Studies and Social Sciences at Makerere University deal with their identities in fields that are often seen as female-dominated. These fields focus on feminist and gender equality topics, which can make male students feel like they don’t belong or struggle with their identity in these spaces. By interviewing and holding group discussions with these students, the study explores how they face and manage gender expectations. It also looks at how they find their place in a space where traditional masculine roles are challenged. The research highlights how these students build leadership skills and deal with the complexity of their situation. This is important because these skills help them manage in broader intercultural and diverse environments, where gender dynamics play a key role. The findings will show how male students in gender-focused courses learn to lead and engage with complex issues of identity and diversity. The study offers advice on how to make these academic environments more welcoming for students of all genders.
