Why All Educators Should Visit a Black Church: How Music and Culture Inform Equity

Abstract

Many educators find themselves teaching students that have backgrounds that differ significantly from their own. This includes differences in race, ethnicity, and socio-economic status. Lack of understanding of these differences often cause gaps in achievement and behavior concerns. Being our world is full of diversity, it is necessary to fill these gaps with knowledge that provides educators with strategies that promote equity and celebrate differences. Using music as a tool, we note that understanding students’ cultures through direct participation is necessary to move forward. By actively engaging in student culture, such as attending a black church service, teachers gain relevant and appropriate context to create equitable practices and provide cultural appreciation for all students.
