Abstract
An organization’s commitment to inclusion is only as good as the strategy that is utilized to effect change. Without preparation and recognition, the pushback that occurs to inclusion initiatives can render the very best of intentions and practices mute. In this session, participants will gain perspective and practice on research-based strategies that support personnel in navigating pushback in order to provide safe, inclusive environments for LGBTQ+ youth and other historically excluded audiences. This session will include an interactive exploration of why stakeholder friction has evolved in response to inclusion efforts. Participants will gain new perspectives, tools, and talking points to navigate stakeholder friction and improve the capacity of their program to support access and belonging for all youth. Strategies are grounded in Elliot-Engel’s published research on Shifting Focus Friction. These authors have also published articles on the topic and have been invited to present this information at previous conferences in the US.
