The Influence of Parental Factors on Child Expressive Language Development

Abstract

This study aims to identify the correlation between the parental factor model and children’s expressive language development and explore how family socioeconomic status can moderate the relationship. This study used the quantitative method with correlation research type. The research population was taken at Kindergarten A and Kindergarten B, Mentari Bontoa in Makassar City. The sample used amounted to one hundred parents. The sampling technique used was the purposive sampling method. Data were collected through questionnaires or questionnaires that refer to the Likert scale. The results showed that (1) there is an influence of parental attitudes on child expressive language development as indicated by p value = 0.000, (2) there is an influence of parental involvement on child expressive language development as indicated by p value = 0.884, (3) there is an influence of parental modeling on child expressive language development shown with p value = 0.431, (4) there is an influence of parent–child communication on child expressive language development shown with p value = 0.042, and (5) there is an influence of parental support on child expressive language development shown with p value = 0.155. Also, there is a mutually influencing relationship between socioeconomic status and child language development. This study shows the importance of parental involvement and communication in children’s expressive language development, with socioeconomic status moderating this relationship. Thus, there is a need for support programs for low-income families. Future research should explore other factors such as school environment and technology.
