Omani Private Universities
Abstract
Education is crucial for human development, as it impacts living standards, innovation, poverty reduction, and economic growth. Private universities play a significant role in contributing by enhancing individuals’ abilities, skills, employment opportunities, and political participation. This study focuses on Oman’s private university education programs. The government has made significant strides in human development; however, challenges persist in sustaining progress and promoting comprehensive development. The study uses a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach with interviews with university teachers, employees, and students at various education levels. The study ensures privacy and accuracy by not recording the names of universities or respondents, protecting their identities, and avoiding self-censorship. Findings show that private universities in Oman increase the number of people holding higher degrees, but the quality of education is still weak. The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research allows two-year diploma holders to enroll in postgraduate studies, but most do not enhance their qualifications and capacity. The study recommends organizations focus on enhancing the quality of education, paying attention to quality rather than quantity, working with youth to enhance their internal motivation, and mentoring private universities to be more serious about the quality of education.
