Abstract

The increasing growth of internationalization has made intercultural competence (IC) essential in intercultural communication. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate IC of Chinese college students, especially Chinese non-English majors. This survey intends to explore IC of 75 freshmen and 130 sophomores, juniors, and seniors in Wenzhou University, China. It begins with an overview of the background of IC, including its definition, significance, and the current situation of intercultural teaching in China, based on which the research is conducted. After the survey and systematic analysis, the current situation of Chinese non-English majors is presented so as to help teachers and students to make corresponding adjustments in intercultural teaching and learning and develop college students’ IC. Based on these findings, some feasible suggestions for the combination of IC and college English teaching are presented.
