Abstract
The transformative potential of augmented reality (AR) interventions in addressing the challenges faced by individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a significant factor for this review. AR’s tailored and interactive nature aligns with diverse learning needs, enhancing communication, social skills, and sensory sensitivities. Integrating multiplayer game content, dual-task exercises, and personal health record (PHR) systems into AR interventions offers a holistic approach to promoting social skills and cognitive function. A systematic literature search and meta-analysis were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of augmented therapy in persons with ASD. Evidence supports AR’s positive impact, but research gaps necessitate broader demographic inclusion and rigorous methodologies. AR interventions show promise in rehabilitating ASD challenges, bolstered by a surge in research interest. These interventions underline technology’s dynamic role in transforming the lives of individuals with ASD, creating innovative avenues for skill development, interaction, and well-being. Findings from this review can be used to inform evidence-based clinical practice and health-care policy decisions.
