Week 11 Task - Social Networks in Education
The social media platform that I have chosen to perform the learning scenario on is Edmodo. This site provides users with a number of features and allows a number of learning activities to be performed. These activities include polls, quizzes as well asclassroom discussions. For this particular learning scenario I decided to choose an assignment.
Edmodo allows educators to easily create the assignment, set who needs to do it, choose the due date. Students can then send their work in to be graded by the educator. They can send it as text within the provided text box or even as a file attachment. Students can also directly communicate with their educators through a direct message in case there are any issues or even post comments on the assignment post itself.
After the educator has marked the assignments each student's mark is added to a database within the site. The site then collects this data on the student performance and also provided other information such as student engagement and then presents it on a dashboard that displays information on all of the students that are part of the group of the particular Course co-ordinator. This dashboard can display information on both invidual students as well as overall performance. This allows them to easily gauge how all of their students are faring as well as if any students need any individual assistance. This is further aided due to the notification system that informs all users whenever anything of note occurs.
However, this site does hinder a particular aspect of student interaction since there is no means for students to communicate directly with each other on the site itself. This would make it difficult to work on any group projects or to have any work-related discussions between a select group of students.
