In the first part of the class we will be learning the basic concepts used in the philosophical study of ethics and morality. Our goal is not to become experts in philosophy, but instead to use the powerful theories and techniques that have been developed in the study of philosophy over the last few millennia and use those tools in dealing with the ethical and moral problems that are encountered every day by IT professionals.
You will work through each module in turn at your own pace. Each module is meant to take about a week to complete but some modules require more work than others. Each module will have a table that will give you a suggested schedule of how much time you will need to devote to each lesson and activity within the module.
Pre-course Survey
Your course facilitator will now post the Pre-course Survery to your activity stream. This survey is intended to test your ability to understand and use the basic terms we use in the study of ethics and morality. Do not worry if some of these terms are new or hard to understand. We will be covering them later in the course. Also, do not look up definitions online yet, we will not be using this survey to calculate your final grade so no need to stress too much about this one.
Learning comunities
Being part of a learning community will greatly enhance your education. To help facilitate this please introduce yourself to the course facilitator through the messaging function on Scholar. Include what your professional goals are and anything else that might help your course administrator get to know you better. Also be sure to introduce yourself to other students found on the community. Be sure to have your user profile fully filled out and upload a picture or avatar as well. Building a network of colleagues is one of the things that will ensure your success in the professional world so always take every opportunity to extend that network through interacting with fellow students.
Please post an intoduction of yourself into the comments section below
In Module 2 we will look at why it is important for IT professionals to have a working understanding of ethics and morality even though you may be planning on just working with computers in your professional lives.
Hey! My name is Madison Verner and i am a senior at SSU. I will be graduating in the spring of this year. My major is communications and am hoping to end up in the radio business. I am taking this class to fulfill my last GE units. This is the first philosophy class that I have taken and am excited to learn about cyberethics in this course!
Hi everyone, my name is Natalie. I'm a transfer student to SSU and Spring will likely be my last semester! I'm a Global Studies major, hence why I'm taking this class, but also because I have an interest in philosophy. Philosophy was the first-ever college class I took and I haven't been able to fit one in my schedule since. So I'm excited to start this class. I still haven't quite figured out my professional goals just yet. I work at an immigration law firm right now, so I'm thinking about that field, but I'm not sure. I'm interested in social justice and I want that to play a role in my future.
Hey! My name is Ashley Narciso and I am a senior at SSU. My major is Business Administration with a concentration in marketing. I am interested in working for the wine and spirits industry after graduation. I was a transfer student from a community college in the east bay and am also from the east bay. I have taken a few other philosophy courses before but none on this topic of cyberethics, so I’m interested to more learn about it!
Hello everyone, my name is Cassandra Abad. I am a senior graduating in May with my Electrical Engineering degree. I am taking this class to not only fulfill my GE pattern but the course in itself sounds interesting. In my major with students constantly inventing new products and projects ethics is highly emphasized. I want to expand my knowledge with cyber ethics since most of the world and its interactions are on the internet.
Hello, my name is Claire Hosburgh and I am a Business Admin major at Sonoma State. My concentration will be wine and I am expecting to graduate this Spring. I am taking this class to fulfill my upper division GE, however computers do have a big role in the wine industry.
Hello all, my name is Kylie McCabe and I am a forth year Philosophy Major here at Sonoma State. I am a great lover of hard conversations, ambigous questions and generally all things that require a beard-stroking, head-scratching party. I am not chill. I am taking this class as the final installment of the Philosophy track. I will graduate this May to begin a happy, real adult-ing life of overthinking and toga-wearing (apparently the only things my degree is now good for).
Hi, my name is Samantha Noriega and I am a third year student at Sonoma State from San Diego, CA. I am an Economics major, also minoring in Art Studio and I will be graduating (hopefully) in the Spring of 2019. I'm taking this course to complete my final GE requirements and focus solely on my major and minor courses. I've only taken one Philosophy class but it was a SYRCE course, so I'm excited to see what I'm able to gain from this winter class.
Hi all, my name is Haley Nicholson and I am in my fourth year at Sonoma State. I will be graduating this coming Spring with my BA in Early Childhood Studies. I plan to start the credential program shortly after in hopes to get started in my career as an elementary school teacher. I enrolled in this course to complete my last GE requirements. I have not taken Philosophy class yet and am interested to learn more on the topic of Cyberethics. I am very excited to be completing this course in the comfort of my own home. I hope you all are enjoying Winter break and I look forward to getting to know you all better!
My name is Alison Prunauer and I am in my third year at Sonoma State. I am working towards a B.S. in Kinesiology and I am planning on entering the Health Care field, possibly as a Physical Therapist or working in Orthopedics. I am taking this class to fulfill a GE requirment, but I have had an interest in philosophy ever since I took my first philosphy course at Sonoma State. I look forwad to learning more about Cyberethics and hopefully being able to apply what I learn in my everyday life!
Great to meet you all! Looks like we have some very interesting people in this course. We are still waiting for the rest of the students to join us here on Scholar so keep posting here, if you have not done so already!
