Understanding the Circularity Scenario of the Indian Textile Sector
Abstract
The Indian textile and apparel sector substantially influences the country’s economic landscape. However, the concept of the circular economy for the textile industry is still in its early stages of development in India. Policies and regulations related to the circular economy are in a nascent stage in India. It is important to analyze the Indian textile scenario in order to develop such policies. The role of policymakers is important in this respect. Policies and regulations can enforce best practices throughout the supply chain. Global and domestic policies regarding substance restrictions and bans can connect the textile production and after-use phases regarding chemicals used. Gaps remain in the existence of policies. The aim of this study is to understand the circularity scenario of the Indian textile sector by understanding the level of recognition of the circular economy in policy documents and circular economy opportunities that exist in India’s textile sector. Text mining of existing policies is done to understand the status of policies in the Indian fashion and textile industry regarding the circular economy. Additionally, an in-depth interview method was used to explore the opportunities and scope of circularity in India’s textile sector by engaging with various stakeholders in the industry. The study indicates that the lack of infrastructure and lack of technology are significant challenges that limit the progression of circularity in the sector. The industry has limited government support. Existing regulations support sustainability components only to a limited degree. The available resource management and waste reduction guidelines need to be more comprehensive. More incentives, such as tax breaks, subsidies, or other assistance forms, are required to implement circularity practices. Comprehensive guidelines need to be created to assist the textile industry in reducing hazardous chemical usage.
