The Transformation of a Traditional Object by Design Intervention:
Abstract
Contemporary demands often surpass the capabilities of traditional craft objects, necessitating their reproduction using local artisanal techniques. The omnipresence of modern technologies and production methodologies frequently facilitates the evolution of these traditional artifacts. Design interventions play a pivotal role in orchestrating such transformations. This article highlights the case of Çember weaving, a local product in Türkiye, which has undergone adaptation to address contemporary needs. The research employed participatory methodologies involving members of a women’s cooperative committed to preserving the local craft heritage. Throughout three workshops, participants collaborated to innovate and develop an original product tailored to current market demands. The study culminated in the transformation of Eflani Çember weaving, creating a novel product aligned with contemporary consumer preferences. Consequently, a design intervention was implemented to ensure the enduring viability of this indigenous craft tradition. This endeavor underscores the significance of design in fostering the sustainability and evolution of local crafts amid evolving societal needs and technological advancements.
