The Impact of Creative Writing on Language Learning
Abstract
This study aims at finding out the impact of creative writing on language learning. Eleven students at Prep School at Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakif University, Istanbul, Turkiye (five male, six female), between 17-19 years of age, participated in this study. It was an eight-week process through which a story following “The Hero’s Journey” template by Joseph Campbell was individually created by the students with the mentorship of a teacher. The students and the teacher gathered online on a weekly basis to create the story. The students were provided with corrective feedback about the grammar errors by the teacher. Phenomenological research method was among the qualitative research methods used in this study. Pre- and post-tests and focus group interviews were conducted with the participants to obtain data after the implementation was completed. To analyze the data, the results of the pre- and post-tests were analyzed via SPSS, and codes and themes were created via the content analysis to analyze the outcome of the focus group meetings. The results have shown that creative writing has positive impacts on language learning in a variety of ways.
