Abstract

This study investigates experiences of stigma, discrimination, and support among members of a community-based mental illness consumers’ peer support agency as they access housing, health services, social and family life, work, and education. In spite of significant structural and institutional barriers to community involvement for people with mental health challenges, affiliation with a peer support agency provides a valuable support and opportunities to acquire service delivery literacy. In addition, having a place and sense of belonging in the community engenders resilience and makes people feel they are able to contribute to the community in worthwhile and meaningful ways.
