Organizational Commitment of Employees in a Public Higher Education Institution
Abstract
With interest in clarifying the gap between organizational commitment (OC) and its predictors; employee engagement (EE), work environment (WE), and organizational learning (OL), this study investigated 187 employees in a public higher education institution in the Philippines. Using a quantitative design to analyze 7-point Likert data gathered through the Organizational Commitment Scale, the study revealed a high level of commitment among the public higher education institution (HEI) employees, indicating strong identification with the institution’s goals. EE and OL are found to be significant and positive predictors of OC, while WE is a non-significant negative predictor. EE was rated as the highest predictor, suggesting employees feel energized and enthusiastic and find their work meaningful. OL was the second-highest rated factor, indicating that the institution provides opportunities for learning and development. WE was rated moderately, suggesting a relatively positive but not exceptional one. The predictors were also observed in terms of differences according to the demographic profile of respondents; it was revealed that nonteaching personnel view their WE more positively compared to their teaching counterparts, and overall, females have significantly higher OC when compared to their male counterparts.
