Abstract

Most countries have a so called unorganized informal sector, that makes different levels of contribution to the countries well being. This sector is so named because it is based on premises that are not of concern to the current education and political ethos. In India, the unorganized informal sector encompasses 90% of the population, contributes 56.7% to the NDP and yet this sector is outside the domain of both the education and administrative systems with little financial input for its growth. With increasing aspiration and diminishing opportunities, discontent and violence is reinforced. The current education system’s heavy reliance on logico-mathematical and linguistic intelligence as the sole precursor for modernization has left vast population segments outside its reach. This paper discusses a model of a trans-disciplinary, human and environment centred university, where development opportunities and peace is seen as two sides of the same coin. Local practices are seen as the incubator for educational enquiry. The proposed university has faculty for creative & caring education, faculty for vocational & entrepreneurial learning, faculty for enterprise development, faculty for development studies and faculty of distant education. The university in addition will have industrial park, craft bazaar, and forests, organic farms, lakes and orchards as laboratories where theory and practice shall meet. The proposed university will give a boost to production distribution and consumption system that are more local, spontaneous and self sustainable.
