Update 4: The Brain is a Muscle
I think anytime "how something works" is made accessible, performance is boosted. For example, I had the hardest time learning how to drive a manual transmission. I misused the clutch because I was focusing too much on the MPH readings on the dash. It just didn't make sense to me how to move the clutch at the right time. It was not until I learned exactly what the transmission was doing in the gears and could actually visualize the gears moving underneath the hood, that I learned how to drive the sucker. I believe the same can be said about the brain and learning. We know how to take care of our muscles via exercise, we know how to maintain heart heath, yet we simply take for granted brain health and performance. I feel as though if students are empowered to the knowledge of how the brain operates, they will feel invested in their own brain health.
