Update 4- Tell Me, Show Me, Let Me Try
Tell Me, Show Me, Let Me Try
By comparing transformational pedagogy and andragogy it has allowed me to accept using the term pedagogy when creating coursework for adult learners. When I think about developing coursework for college age or post college age learners it often uses all three types of pedagogical approaches. I often use an approach called “tell me, show me, let me try”. This approach to teaching adults leverages didactic pedagogy for the “tell me” portion of the course. This is when the instructor is showing PowerPoint slides and talking through the basic concepts of the lesson. This could either be live in the classroom or video recorded slides. The instructor will then transition into using authentic pedagogy for the “show me” portion of the course by demonstrating the activity they are expecting the learners to complete. Lastly, the instructor would start the “let me try” section of the course by providing the learners with sample data to complete a table project with their table group or independently to complete the exercise and then debrief the exercise with the whole course. This is a great way for the learners to try to use their newly acquired knowledge in a very low stakes environment. “Their recommended techniques are useful in a range of learning conditions, assist learners of various ages, abilities, and levels of prior knowledge—and have been tested in a classroom or other real-world situation.”(1)
