Update 1: Pedagogy and Andragogy

During this course, we will be discussing several forms of pedagogical approaches. I’d like to explore the three main pedagogical approaches and research how they are used when designing a course, when they are most appropriately used, and if they are used exclusively or interchangeably. I’m interested in this use of pedagogy as it relates to my professional career as an Instructional Designer who focuses mainly on adult learning. I’m more familiar with andragogy, however I do believe that pedagogy informs andragogy and therefore the three main types of pedagogy are of interest to me.

Definition of pedagogy by the Cambridge Dictionary is the “study of the methods and activities of teaching” (Cambridge Dictionary). Even though it doesn’t mention the age or stage of the learner, it’s generally assumed the learner is in the k-12 & higher ed age range. Whereas the definition of andragogy by the same reference is the “theory, methods, and activities involved in teaching adult learners”(Cambridge Dictionary). I’m interested in researching how different pedagogical approaches relate to the andragogy framework developed by Knowles.
