Matthew Gong’s Updates
Assignment 19
I went and decided to play Call of Duty online. As is quite common with online multiplayer games obscene things are said all the time. The game is a typical first-person shooter in which teams run around and kill the members of the opposing team. While all this is going on players have the ability to chat with one another over a headset. In almost every game that I played there was at least one person yelling or saying something either sexists or racists. This is quite common for these types of games. It is often the case that the people online who are doing this are in a way just trolling everyone who is playing by saying the same things we have all heard over and over. I would like to say that in all my life playing these types of games that this behavior has gotten better. However, I see no indication of that. Perhaps it is just the nature of the platform and the type of game that will attract someone who will always say these types of things. The internet and especially online games that involve communication between players will always be a difficult place to police this type of obscene behavior.
Yes, it does seem this kind of activity caters to certain games. I think people start to see it as okay because it is in fact common, but the frequency of something is never a justification for such.
