  Debra Merskin, Ph.D., Syracuse University, is Professor of Media Studies in the School of Journalism & Communication at the University of Oregon. Her research addresses issues of representational ethics in visual and verbal discourse in mass media texts. Her publications appear in journals such as the Howard Journal of Communications, Sex Roles, American Behavioral Scientist, and Mass Communication & Society and in books such as Growing up girls; Commodity racism; Mediated women: Representations in popular culture; Sexual rhetoric: Media perspectives on sexuality, gender, and identity; and Dressing in feathers: The construction of the Indian in American popular culture. She is currently completing a book about the social, psychological, and cultural context for stereotyping in American mass media.
