EDUC 499: Greece - Summer 2019’s Updates
History and Culture
I enjoyed watching these videos. They were very informal and fun, yet very informational. To start off with, I think it is CRAZY that 40% of the population lives only in the capital. I can't imagine having so many people concentrated in one area of the United States like that. I was unaware that Macedonia was actually part of Greece, which was interesting to learn.
As for the number of islands that Greece has, it is insane that only 220 out of 2000 islands are inhabited. Are many of the other ones even inhabitable? Could they make them be for the large 40% of the population in Athens alone? How many people actually will use a mule before a car in Skyros and Hydra?
It blows my mind that over 80% of the revenue is from tourism. They literally count on others from around the world to stay put. Another interesting thing is the amount of older people in Greece. The next generation is going to be much smaller than the current one, and so I wonder what effects that could potentially have on the economy?
I really think that it is awesome that we will get to experience a plan that is so reliable on tourism to their financial system. I think it will be interesting to see the ratio of tourists to natives that we encounter on our trip. Greece has a high population and concentration as well as their group is very different than what we have in the US especially in regards to their age group. I am very excited for our interactions as well as experiences!
Dominique, I also appreciated the fun and informational aspects of the videos. I was actually surprised that the channel Geography Now managed to get so much information about Greece with the amount of time they had.
I agree that 40% of a country's population in one city is an interesting number. I can't wait to see how this reflects how the city functions.
I also would like to explore further the tourism and service statistic. Although they were not surprising to me, I would like to learn more about how these fields employ the population. I am also interested in learning the educational and professional opportunities to prepare people for this workforce.
