EDUC 499: Greece - Summer 2019’s Updates
2. History & Culture Update
Greece has always been on my bucket list and I am so excited to explore this country in a study abroad environment.
Although I have always been aware of Greece's location on the map I never realized how many islands they have: over 2,000! It made me want to do more research in terms of how self-sufficient these islands can be and how much traffic between them and the mainland are required to transport supplies, people, etc. It also explains Greece's vulnerability in the current migration crises, being the most accessible country by water to give access to other European nations.
I also never realized that no continental area in Greece is farther than 80 miles from the water and the fact that they have sunshine throughout the year. I wonder if we can find a connection between this and the low suicidal rate. I mean, everybody seems happy on a sunny day at the beach :)
Greece has such a big part in the world's history and we all grew up listening in school about its role in molding some important areas of our current world. I can't wait to hear and learn from the Greek people their perception about their own nation, its importance to history and its role in this current globalized world.
Hi! Greece has always been on my bucket list too! I am so glad we are both able to check this off the list!! I too did not realize how many islands they have in Greece. 2,000 is a lot and I never expected it to be this large of a number. I think that it was very insightful for you to mention Greece's vulnerability in relation to the migration crisis. This is something that is important for people to understand. I love the connection you are looking at between the sunny skies and the low suicide rates. I am interested in this connection as well. Great update and I cannot wait to travel to Greece very soon!
