EDUC 499: Greece - Summer 2019’s Updates
Greek Education System
Students in Greece in Primary school (elementary school) learn basic skills in a number of subjects, like Language Reading and Writing, Environmental Studies, Maths, English. Primary Schools in Greece operate between 8am and 1pm, while the majority of those offer extra classes on Physical Education, Art and Music until 4pm. A student may attend the Junior High School which is located in his neighborhood, or he/she may be admitted to an Experimental Junior High School through a lottery system. Students who have a special interest in painting, drama, dancing or music may attend a Junior High School that specializes in the field. I have seen education done like this in the United States in Florida. My cousins live in Boca Raton and when they are in High school they can choose a career track in which they can follow in preparation for college. In Greece however, there are also Junior High Schools which address students from a multicultural background, as well as students with special needs. A variety of subjects are taught in Junior High Schools, including Modern and Ancient Greek Language, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, History, Physical Education, Religious Studies, Music and Art, while special emphasis is given to foreign language learning, as students are taught both English and another European language of their choice, just like we do in the United States.
High Schools offer a combination of General Education courses and Advanced Placement courses. Students who wish to pursue studies in Higher Education take Panhellenic exams in a specific number of Advanced Placement courses which fall into one of the following categories: Humanities, Science, Technology. This is considered to be a tough and highly competitive exam process that students go through in order to ensure education at a higher level.
Hi Megan! I enjoyed reading your post. I found the Greek education system to be fascinating. I like how you laid it out by the various levels of schooling. It is interesting to me that the primary schools run from 8am-1pm. That is very different than in the US. The junior high school structure is interesting to me. It is cool that students can choose to attend a junior high school that specializes in something they are interested in. I also find the concept of the experimental junior high school to be interesting.
Megan and Ashley,
I always enjoy the conversation about school hours. I attended school in Brazil, where schools ran two schedules: am and pm. I always find interesting learning the arguments behind those that believe student should stay more or less hours in the school environment.
Hi Megan, while reading your thoughts about the school day and variety of schools in Greece, I thought more about the variety of junior high schools which is something that stuck out to me while reading as well. I am now wondering what kind of inclusion and differentiation practices exist in public junior high schools that are not multicultural or special education focused. I am interested in learning more about how these specialized schools function and what pros and cons there are to separating these populations.
