EDUC 499: Greece - Summer 2019’s Updates
2. Greece - History and Culture
The videos for this week were so interesting! I didn’t realize that Greece was divided into 13 regions and 9 geographic regions. In retrospect of course this makes sense, but I’ve never really given it any thought, especially because I’ve always thought of Ancient Greece in terms of the city-states, which were different in a different way, and I guess I just assumed that modern day Greece, since like other European countries it’s really small, was just that. I also think it’s really cool the extent to how marine-based they are as a country, and I wonder if perhaps Athens’ ancient way of life may have been the precursor to the systems used today. One thing I wanted to know more about as I was listening is the conflict between Greece and Turkey, so if anyone knows anything about it I’d love to learn!
I am also extremely excited to see all of the archeological and historical sites! I’m hoping to get off the beaten path while I’m there and see Greece how it is, but I also definitely want to go to what are more tourist-y destinations. Speaking of which, the fact that more tourists visit than the entire population of Greece per year is insane to me! I wonder what sort of political conversations come up surrounding this, since being so reliant on tourism is always risky for an economy. How often does Greece see floods, tornados, tsunamis, etc.?
These were just a few of the things that stood out to me. I CANNOT wait!
Hi Jessica, great points! I agree that I regrettably did not know much about Greek geography either, but am glad I know at least a little more now. I also recalled pieces of the history reference between Turkey and Greece but do not have a great understanding of this either and made a note to read more about it before traveling to Greece. Your question about the effect of natural disasters is a good one considering how much water surrounds Greece. I assume since it is shielded more than islands on a big coast, that they are safer than many others, but I do not know any statistics around this.
Hi Jess,
I enjoyed reading what stood out to you. I am also psyched to see all of the archeological and historical sites! I also found it interesting that Greece is divided into 13 regions and have over 2000 islands. I also found it crazy how many tourists visit Greece each year. This was an interesting post.
