EDUC 499: Greece - Summer 2019’s Updates
Introduction Update
In the article Becoming World Wise, Slimbach emphasizes the idea of study abroad being more for the world than it is for the individual. Slimbach believes that studying abroad in another country will allow our world to come together as one, to have a connection between cultures, identities, and experiences. Although this is contrasted by Dolby who believes that studying abroad is crucial for the "American identity". What I found interesting about this though is how many students commented that while abroad, people knew more about what was happening in America than the students knew about what was happening in Europe. This is something that my friends abroad have mentioned to be true as they have expereinced so many people in Europe being able to speak English in addition to their first language, while none of my friends could speak a language other than English.
I would argue that study abroad is a combination of both Slimbach and Dolby's ideas. I do believe that studying abroad will be a great personal experience for me, shaping my beliefs of the world around me. But I also believe that in doing so, I will be able to make connections with people I meet in Greece, becoming more culturally aware and connected through experiences, conversations, meals, and much more.
Hi Jessica!
I enjoyed reading your response. I agree that studying in Greece will contain a combination of both Slimbach and Dolby's ideas and I also agree that I will be become more culturally aware and connected through my experiences.
Jessica,
I appreciate your post and your ideas! I think that it will be very interesting to see how these perspectives and theories can be applied when we are going through the abroad experience ourselves! I do think that abroad is a combination of both Slimbach's and Dolby's ideas. I am very excited to see what happens

Hey Jessica! I agree with the points you made in your update. I too found it incredibly interesting to hear that students abroad knew more about what was happening in America than the students knew about what was happening in Europe. I too have heard people abroad say this, so it was interesting to make this connection.
Hi Jessica,
I agree with your point about how in the article, many students who were aboard knew more about America, as I found this really interesting too. This is also something that my friends who are abroad have mentioned to me, and I think is a similar experience that many people have had when abroad.
Hi Jessica,
After reading these articles, I also hope to become more culturally aware and connected through experiences. I really liked how Slimbach sees studying abroad as a way our countries can come together. I think this is really important to be able to appreciate and understand other cultures and countries. I'm excited to learn more about Greece's culture!
