Neoliberal Rationality and Artificial Intelligence: The Commodification of Public Discourse and the Consequent Threats to Democracy

Abstract

The enthusiasm for artificial intelligence is palpable; the concept of “neoliberal rationality” can better explain the acceptance of the technology. Moreover, artificial intelligence is the best tool to further make the world in the image of “neoliberal rationality.” The greatest travesty of the use of artificial intelligence is the commodification of public discourse, by governments, corporations, and individuals themselves. The commodification of public discourse has grave consequences for democracy, which include using artificial intelligence–deliberately or not–for the dissemination of misinformation and disinformation and the replication of prejudice and racial bias. Artificial intelligence, then, is a tool that fosters distrust not only in democratic institutions but also among individuals themselves.
