Artificial Intelligence in Academia: Navigating ChatGPT in Social Work

Abstract

Since its inception in the 1950s, artificial intelligence has rapidly evolved, leading to the development of large language models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Launched in November 2022, ChatGPT is a freely accessible tool that generates human-like text, reshaping the educational landscape. This exploratory mixed-method study examines social work educators’ experiences with students’ use of ChatGPT, utilizing surveys and semi-structured interviews. Findings reveal that while educators recognize ChatGPT’s potential as a learning tool, they express discomfort in addressing its use. Concerns center around ethical implications, overreliance, and the false perception of mastery it may create among students. The study underscores the need for institutional guidelines to uphold academic integrity and mitigate plagiarism risks. Furthermore, intentional and ethical integration of AI into the social work curriculum is essential. This paper explores best practices for incorporating ChatGPT into social work education, balancing innovation with ethical responsibility, and fostering critical engagement with AI tools in academic and professional settings.
