The Inequality of Nations: The Effect of Artificial Intelligence on the Wealth of Nations and Global Inclusion

Abstract

The era of artificial intelligence (AI) has ushered in unprecedented opportunities for economic growth and technological advancement. However, it can exacerbate existing inequalities and create new disparities among nations. This paper examines the dual-edged impact of AI on the wealth of nations and global inclusion, exploring how AI contributes to economic inequality and inequities among nations. We analyze how AI-driven economic benefits are disproportionately concentrated in technologically advanced nations, leaving developing countries behind. The disparities in AI infrastructure, research capabilities, and policy frameworks are significant contributors to this divide. Wealthier nations with robust AI ecosystems will likely experience accelerated economic growth, innovation, and productivity gains, while poorer nations will struggle to keep pace, widening the global wealth gap. Moreover, we investigate the ramifications of such global exclusion, highlighting how AI can perpetuate and amplify existing societal inequities. Issues such as biased algorithms, job displacement, and unequal access to AI technologies disproportionately affect marginalized communities, exacerbating social and economic divides. Our research underscores the urgent need for equitable AI policies and international cooperation to ensure that the benefits of AI are broadly shared. We advocate for policy frameworks that promote inclusive AI development, address ethical considerations, and mitigate adverse impacts on vulnerable populations. By fostering global collaborations and investing in capacity-building for developing nations, we can strive towards a more just and equitable distribution of AI’s benefits, ensuring that AI serves as a tool for global prosperity rather than a catalyst for further inequality.
