Flipped classroom model is an alternative method to prepare lessons for online and campus-based classes.

In this assignment I’d like to share my own experience of how I implemented this model as student and teacher.

Flipped classroom

I’ve personally invented a type of flipped classroom as I was in high school. At that time it wasn’t an effective model, because schools in Ukraine haven’t implemented this principle yet. It was a bit too difficult, because I had no syllabus, and also teachers in Ukrainian schools think that students should not have access to it. I did everything intuitively. After a few attempts I found an approach, that worked for me. I felt much more relaxed in classroom, it wasn’t such a big stress for my brain to absorb an enormous amount of new information. I also felt way more confident and my fear of failure has significantly decreased.

At the University of Munich a lot of professors used this model of flipped classroom too. An important advantage for me was how deep could I concentrate. After I have read information at home, now in classroom I can easily see where I have most problems, which questions should I discuss. And after classes I can say that all stuff we learned is in my head, moreover – in my long-term memory. While after standard classes I always felt that my brain explodes, but it doesn’t mean that I have understood at least 5%.

The most important aspect of flipped classroom for me is that it can significantly release stress in education. I have no fear that I am alone with all problems and questions, that I need solve all of them on my own. Also, I am not afraid, that I say something wrong – when I can discuss the problem with teacher or professor, and not just pass the test after my homework, I feel confidence to speak out without fear of failure.

That’s why I base my own lessons using this model. I am a German teacher, and usually I have all my lessons online. My own goal is to make my students feel confident while they learn a new language.

After I implemented this model of flipped classroom fully in my teaching routine, I can see progress in learning. Also, my students not only can see it too, but they also feel less stressed during our classes.
