Update 5: The Social Mind and Classroom Management
The Social mind can be closely linked to our practices of classroom management. As teachers we can use our classroom management strategies to help shape desired behavior. One way to do this is through positive reinforcement strategies. Positive reinforcement refers to providing something desired to students (verbal praise/extra recess/small reward) whenever a desired behavior is shown. When the reward is given, it is likely to increase the frequency of that behavior.
Many schools will incorporate a PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports). The program can be structured to focus on areas where students may need additional support.
The following video outlines a schools PBIS system:
In the video, the school gives students stars for desired behaviors. And as discussed, there has been an increase of good behaviors in the hallways and common areas, as well as a decrease of referrals.
Although this strategy is commonly used in school settings, it may translate to behavior outside of the the classroom.
