Since we started this class and I continued to learn more and more about the internet I was very surprised with what I started to notice when I was on the internet. I am not a technology blessed person, I am more of a technology challenged person. I have never been good at understanding or working technology. Learning more about different types and all different things that go on while on the internet is actually pretty fascinating. I have always wondered about the ads on Facebook or Instagram or even just the pop ups that we receive when on the internet. I have always thought that is was strange how these sites knew what I had looked at on other websites or what top I had been online shopping for earlier in the day. I had always seen it as a weird thing but never really second guessed it. Now I see it as a brilliant but still creepy business move because I myself have fallen a victim of this business tactic. I have seen the add on Facebook or Instagram and been like wow those shoes I was looking at earlier are really cute or that Tupperware (adulting at it’s finest.) is a good deal and purchased it when I was reminded by these websites. I find that I am very much myself on social media but I do tend to post quite a bit. I am mostly on social media because of family that lives far away and this is how they keep up with what I am doing. I definitely am very cautious with what I post because I know and am constantly reminded when I see my parents that everyone sees what you post and once you post something you are not going to get it back. I find myself saying that when I see some peoples posts on social media. I find myself thinking I wondering what their parents think when they see that or I hope their boss doesn’t have a Facebook. Before I started having to keep track of my media usage with this log I didn’t think about how much time I really spend on the internet. I am always hiking or exploring outside so I guess I never thought about how much it really plays a role in my life. I think this assignment showed me how I should be spending less time on this and more time enjoying and living my life outside of technology. I was most unaware of how much people post on social media sites and how terrible some of the things are, I also didn’t realize how advertisements use your information to target you. Another thing I did not realize is how much time we all really spend doing things on the internet and how much we should spend time with the people in person instead of typing to them. I am aware that technology has been a huge blessing to everyone’s lives for many reasons, relatives living far away, medical world, business world you name it. It has helped so many people and in so many different ways but it has also harmed so many people in so many ways and I think that is something society needs to work on.
