Update #3 Digital Media
Contemporary digital media are multimodal - where text, image, sound are all manufactured of the same raw material: binary encoding (Coceptualizing Learning). Today, in the digital media era we can easily have the same content be distributed via multiple sources and in various formats. Today’s children and adolescents are immersed in both traditional and new forms of digital media. Evidence-based benefits identified from the use of digital and social media include early learning, exposure to new ideas and knowledge, increased opportunities for social contact and support. Additional benefits include exposure to new ideas and immersive learning experiences. (Chassiakos, Radesky, Christakis et al, 2016)
Newer digital media is a form of media in which users can both consume and actively create content. Examples include applications (apps), multiplayer video games, YouTube videos, or video blogs (vlogs).
In terms of education and learning experiences, having online software that facilitates creation and presentation of information products allows students to expand the content of their tool boxes and incorporate digital media into their work. Creating content in digital environment offers a lot of opportunities. The information doesn’t have to be presented in a liner form or represent only typography. The created product might include visual/audio/video components and graphs. The students are in charge of selecting a format that best responds to the needs of the project. Effective use of digital media leads to a number of benefits, such as:
1) The material presented is more engaging and more comprehensive by the audience;
2) The material presented contains more data and is organized in a more accessible way;
3) The material created can be easily shared and disturbuted via online services;
4) The feedback is availbale simulteneously;
5) Using digital media in learning process develops a number of essential skills, sush as: creativity, crirical thinking, problem solving etc.
