Previously, Michael worked in the NSW Department of Education for nearly 20 years as an ESL teacher and a Multicultural Programs consultant on curriculum, assessment and research projects and policies supporting ESL teaching and learning. He collaborated on two classroom-based, university partnership research projects, investigating 'scaffolding' in ESL and literacy pedagogy (2001-2003), and exploring high challenge/high support pedagogy for ESL students (2005-2007). From 2003 to 2008, he led action learning programs with primary and secondary teacher teams applying and integrating research findings and practice, and developing a school-based model of teacher professional learning.
