Laurajane Smith is a Reader in Cultural Heritage studies at the University of York, UK. She is author of Uses of Heritage (2006) and Archaeological Theory and the Politics of Cultural Heritage (2004), co-author of Heritage, Communities and Archaeology (2009) and most recently has co-edited Intangible Heritage (2009), and edited Cultural Heritage: Critical Concepts in Media and Cultural Studies (2007). She is editor of the International Journal of Heritage Studies and joint series editor of the Key Issues in Heritage Studies (Routledge). She previously taught Indigenous Studies at the University of New South Wales, and worked as a cultural heritage consultant for a number of years in south-east Australia. Together with Paul Shackel and Gary Campbell, she is also working on the edited book Cultural Heritage and the Working Class. Research interests include the re-theorisation of ideas of heritage, the interplay between class and heritage, and multiculturalism and heritage representation.
