Update 3: Active Knowledge Making
Project Based Learning (PBL) is a concept/method that can promote active learning if done properly.
Project Based Learning encourages students to solve real world problems and/or complex problems over the duration of long-term projects.
An example of PBL in practice is a collaborative project conducted at my current school by the Math + Science departments to re-design the city of Tegucigalpa, Honduras to decrease traffic.

PBL helps promote knowledge producers rather than knowledge consumers while promoting authentic assessment.
