Negotiating Learner Differences MOOC’s Updates
Personal experiences of Diversity
A class consisted of unequal number of boys and girls, along with a wide variety of cultures is one of the problems in the Philippine Education. Teaching in a public school for almost 6 years I could basically prove that there were many different religious beliefs, family backgrounds, nationalities, races, social classes, and personalities represented in a class. Material needs for shelter and home and clothing, their emotional needs for faith and love and the symbolic means for how they represent themselves in the world .I could definitely give this an example because a lot of pupils especially in public schools has nothing to eat and even their own parents cannot provide food for everyday living. And sometimes this could really affect their relationship with their classmates, friends and even with their teachers.
Yes! It’s indeed that it’s not a crime to be born into poverty however this is about on how we respond as an educator to come together to address these problems that would greatly affect the lives of the needy people. The majority wants fairness and learners need transformation whatever possibility we could offer. Truly Philippine Education needs to equip teachers with an integrated knowledge of the expected roles, functions and responsibilities to meet the diversity of learning needs in the classroom. When it comes to our classrooms, I conceptualize diversity as understanding each student brings unique experiences, strengths, and ideas inside the classroom.
I have a responsibility to ensure my learners are prepared to work in school in a diverse environment and collaborate with others who bring new perspectives. All that matters is that as an educator we need to negotiate and deal with in the classroom with learners as we try to address the needs for learning and transformation.
As educators, we also have the responsibility to teach our students how to adapt to situations as well. And while I do understand what you are saying. Teaching them compassion, understanding, and how to see the person for who they are not what they have also has a place in the classroom. When teaching the whole person and teaching them how to be well around is a Must!!
