Abstract
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT into academic writing instruction is reshaping English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education. ChatGPT offers various advantages, including personalized feedback, enhanced writing skills, and generating creativity. These unique features align with the demands of nowadays language education, making innovative approaches to teaching and learning. Even though previous studies has been discussed about its benefits for learners, limited attention has been given to EFL teachers’ perceptions of ChatGPT’s role in academic writing. Understanding EFL teachers’ perceptions is essential for designing effective teaching strategies and addressing challenges that may proceed from its use. Despite the growing interest in AI-assisted language learning, researches on ChatGPT’s impact from the EFL teacher’s perspective remains scarce. The key research gaps include the need to explore how ChatGPT influences students’ academic writing skills and the factors shaping EFL teachers’ attitudes toward its integration. Addressing these gaps is vital for aligning technological advancements with pedagogical goals in EFL contexts. This qualitative study investigates how EFL teachers perceive ChatGPT’s role in enhancing students’ academic writing and examines factors influencing their attitudes toward its adoption. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations. Thematic analysis revealed four key themes: ChatGPT’s benefits, challenges, complementarity with traditional methods, and potential for future integration. Findings underline ChatGPT’s reframing potential in supporting EFL academic writing, and concerns about its reliability and academic integrity. This study offers practical implications for instructional design, teacher training, and fostering a more effective integration of AI tools into EFL education.
