Abstract
The innovative course, “Prompt Engineering 101,” aims to integrate the crafting of prompts for AI assistants like ChatGPT into mainstream education. This integration intends to substantially enhance critical thinking abilities and promote fairness and diversity in learning. Critical thinking is vital for navigating modern societal complexities, yet it remains challenging to embed in standard curricula effectively. At the same time, educational institutions are striving to foster inclusiveness and equal opportunities for students from all backgrounds. “Prompt Engineering 101” leverages the widespread accessibility and minimal cost of AI assistants, offering a powerful educational tool aligned with modern pedagogical goals. This type of course’s interactive and reflective learning environment mimics programming, cultivating critical cognitive skills. To back this proposal, the paper thoroughly reviews relevant literature from cognitive psychology, educational psychology, instructional design, computer science education, and sociocultural theory. The aim of this paper is to put forth “Prompt Engineering 101” as a General Education course meant to address both enhancing critical thinking and promoting fairness and diversity. By teaching students how to craft and refine prompts for AI models, the course encourages active, thoughtful learning and provides an affordable, accessible educational resource that spreads quality education to all. Integrating prompt engineering into general education could democratize learning, giving students from diverse backgrounds equal opportunities to access top-tier educational materials. This course emphasizes developing critical thinking through hands-on, interactive experiences, bridging gaps in traditional teaching methods, and fostering a more equitable learning environment.
