Faith in Flux: Navigating Vulnerability and Deconstruction in Spiritual Growth

Abstract

We propose an interpretive phenomenological analysis examining the complex relationship between vulnerability and religious/spiritual deconstruction in contemporary contexts. This study analyzes how these processes interact within individuals and communities navigating changing belief systems. The research utilizes Faith Development Interviews collected from participants in the United States and Germany. We adopt a specific conceptual frameworks where vulnerability is understood as a condition that religious institutions have historically both protected and intensified. We examine deconstruction as a meaning-making process leading to either gained purpose and significance or a loss of purpose and significance, often involving the reevaluation or dismantling of previously held beliefs, practices, and narratives. This investigation explores several key questions: 1. How do individuals experience vulnerability during faith deconstruction processes? 2. In what ways do religious communities respond to members undergoing deconstruction? 3. What protective factors facilitate healthy navigation of deconstruction? 4. How might religious institutions better support individuals experiencing vulnerability during belief transitions? The findings from this research contribute valuable insights to religious studies, psychology of religion, and pastoral care fields. By gaining a deeper understanding of the dynamic intersection of vulnerability, deconstruction, and faith development, we offer actionable insights to foster more supportive environments for individuals navigating faith transitions. This work also addresses significant gaps in current literature regarding the psychological and social dimensions of religious deconstruction within diverse cultural contexts.
