Holy Springs in Iran: A Case Study in Mazandaran Province

Abstract

Iranians have considered water sacred since ancient times. Both because of its rarity and because of the teachings of the religions of Mitraism and Zoroastrianism. In the village where I was born and raised, there was a holy spring, which made me investigate it as a researcher and from a sociological point of view. In this research, combined methods including historical study, library study and field study were used. The results of my research show that the holy springs in Iran have various functions, including as a place to answer prayers, purity, and of course a place for social solidarity of local communities. The people of Iran did not pollute the holy springs, they had special protection from them, they swam in them so that their needs would be met by angels and God, and of course they prepared food next to the springs and threw coins into the water to fulfill their vows. Iranians believed that every spring has a guardian and is sacred. Cheshme played an important role in Iranian religion and society
