Abstract
This study explores the construction of identity among Sapta Darma adherents in Indonesia, a minority spiritual group seeking recognition within the broader socio-religious landscape of the country. Understanding the construction of Sapta Darma adherents’ identity is crucial to understanding the dynamics of religious pluralism, state recognition, and the protection of minority rights in Indonesia. This study contributes to the broader discourse on religious freedom and the intersection of belief systems with national identity. This qualitative study used ethnographic methods, including participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. Data were collected through fieldwork in Sapta Darma adherent communities in several regions in Indonesia. The study involved engaging with key community members, participating in religious rituals, and analyzing state documents and media representations related to Sapta Darma. This facilitated a deep understanding of the internal dynamics of the community and external interactions with the state and society. The findings of this study reveal that Sapta Darma adherents use a combination of spiritual teachings, cultural practices, and strategic interactions with state mechanisms to construct and assert their identity. Despite facing marginalization, the community has developed a resilient identity that blends traditional beliefs with modern state structures. Identity construction among Sapta Darma adherents is a dynamic process influenced by internal belief systems and external socio-political factors. This study concludes that state recognition plays a significant role in shaping the identity and future trajectories of minority religious groups in Indonesia.
