Are Religious Functionaries Becoming Vulnerable?: A Theological Exploration of Contemporary Anti-religious Pan-Africanist Ideologies and the Role of Religious Functionaries

Abstract

The rise of antireligious pan-Africanist ideologies, with their pluriform features of nihilism and radicalism, among others, in contemporary sub-Saharan Africa presents both challenges and prospects to the influence and continued legitimacy of Christian religious functionaries. Given that religious functionaries have historically remained pivotal in shaping societal values, providing moral guidance, and fostering cohesion, the question of vulnerability arises from the present interface between the proponents of these anti-religious ideologies and Christian religious functionaries. The present study explores, theologically, the potential vulnerabilities of religious functionaries in the face of the growing influence of anti-religious ideologies, which appear politically and culturally neutral but appeal to the ethic of patriotism. The theological exploration uses a qualitative design in which functionaries from both sides of the debate are interviewed and data from focused group discussions used for the thematic analysis of emergent patterns and themes. The study revealed that religious functionaries are experiencing heightened vulnerability due to the rise of anti-religious sentiments within pan-Africanist movements. These sentiments often portray religion as colonial imposition and hindrances to African unity and progress. Christian Religious functionaries reportedly felt marginalized and under threat, with some experiencing direct and / or indirect opposition and hostility. Despite these challenges, many continue to play crucial roles in social and moral leadership, adapting their approaches to remain relevant. The study highlights the resilience of religious functionaries, who find new ways to engage communities and to address issues.
