Abstract
I’ll be looking at the ways in which the use of flowers and plants in works of literature has altered over the ages. To effectively execute this, I’ll be considering various works of literature from various periods of time that use plants and flowers directly and indirectly. These include relatively modern works such as The Last Leaf by O Henry along with older examples such as The Wanderer, Deor, Sumer Is Icumen In and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and Piers Plowman by William Langland. My focus is on exploring the change in themes and ideologies represented by flowers and plants over a period of time, with a slight emphasis on the familiarities that continue to persist. Literature truly takes flowers and plants beyond the garden, and my paper focuses on going deeper into just that.
